[2000] [Q 2000]

The diagram above to the left shows the positions of the planets Mercury through Neptune for the year 2000, relative to the Sun. Find the desired time of the year on the horizontal axis, and then go straight up until you cross the line of the planet of interest. Then go straight to the left to find the associated time on the vertical axis. That number is the time difference between the planet and the Sun, measured in hours: the planet is due South that many hours earlier (for a negative number) or later (for a positive number) than the Sun, and the rising and setting of the planet are also approximately that much sooner or later than those of the Sun.

If a planet is in the top part of the diagram, then it is visible after sunset. If the planet is in the bottom part of the diagram, then it is visible before sunrise. If the planet is close to the upper or lower edge of the diagram, then it is visible (almost) all night, and hence in opposition. If the planet crosses the center horizontal line (the location of the Sun), then the planet is in conjunction with the Sun. If the trajectories of two planets cross in the diagram, then those planets are in conjunction with each other. If a number of planets are close together in the diagram, then they are all in conjunction with each other.

The diagram above to the right shows how well the planets Mercury through Saturn are visible in the evening sky in the year 2000. The score is indicated for each planet separately and also for all planets combined. The score takes into account how bright the planet is, how long the planet is visible at night (visibility before midnight counts for more than visibility after midnight), and also whether the planet is so close to the Sun that the sky is not dark enough to see the planet. If the score is low then the planet is visible with difficulty or not at all during the evening.

For an explanation of the above pictures, see the page for the year 2000.

The last table on this page lists a number of noteworthy planetary phenomena during the listed year. The first column ("date") gives the date and hour, in the form year-month-dayThour in the Gregorian calendar, in Universal Time (UT). The second column ("pl") identifies the planet that shows the phenomenon:

pl Planet
Me Mercury
Ve Venus
Ma Mars
Ju Jupiter
Sa Saturn
Ur Uranus
Ne Neptune
Lu Moon

The third column ("*") provides the type of the phenomenon. The fourth column ("AU") shows the value (distance) in Astronomical Units, if applicable. The fifth column ("deg") gives the value of a relevant angle (declination \( δ \), elongation \( E \), conjunction spread \( σ \), or ecliptic longitude \( λ \)) in degrees. Which angle it is for each phenomenon is shown below in column "?". Declinations and ecliptical longitudes are measured relative to the equinox of the date.

The calculations for the planets are based on the VSOP87 model (type A) of Laskar, and the calculations for the Moon are based on the most detailed model from [Meeus]. One position per day was calculated for each celestial object. The hour of the day for each phenomenon was determined by interpolation.
